Description:
  • Unknown maker, probably dates from 1960s, made to measure surface wind. This anemometer works on the magnetic drag principle. Attached to the main spindle is a multi-poled magnet, the north poles lie on the surface of a cylinder and the south poles lie on the surface of a concentric cylinder with a very narrow gap between the pole faces. A light aluminium cylinder is supported in this gap, concentric with the magnetic poles and is constrained against rotation by a light hairspring. When the cup wheel rotates, eddy currents are induced in the aluminium cylinder creating a force tending to turn it about its axis. The deflection produced is dependent on the speed of rotation of the cup wheel and hence the wind speed. The instrument is black and the scale is in knots, in black with white numbering. The handle and cups are of plastic the main instrument is encased in metal. It has a two paper stickers on it, one saying "Do Not Use after 21/06/04" the other has the type, 1438 followed by the serial number 531314.
