Description:
- Observations taken at and around Greenwich Royal Observatory for the period October1811 - 31 June 1851. Daily observations of wind direction, pressure, temperatures and remarks. Also various additional notes such as average temperature at sunrise, days of frost, days of snow and comments on phenological observations and optical phenomena. Volumes VI and VIII- miscellaneous observations includes specific days of note e.g.. weather at the solstices and also observations and a detailed account of a gale or storm in 1838 which claimed at least 100 vessels and 1000 lives rear of book also appears to include pages of algebra and mathematical questions for a child. Box 79a - volume 1 September 1811 - October 1826; volume II - November 1826 - July 1829; volume III August 1829 - October 1832; volume IV November 1832 - December 1835; volume V January 1836 - December 1837; volume VI June 1836 - June 1840 - note - miscellaneous observations; volume VII January 1838 - May 1839 (this volume also contains detailed notes of the storm of 28th and 29th November 1838 including notes on various ships lost and impacts at various locations; volume VIII 1835 - 1840 - miscellaneous observations; volume IX June 1839 - August 1841 (includes account major landslip between Lyme and Seaton 1839. Box also includes copy of article 'The handlers of time: the Belville Family and the Royal Observatory, 1811 - 1939' which gives a brief biography of John Henry Belville who worked for the 7th Astronomer Royal Sir George Airey - Belville and later members of his family set up a time distribution service to all watch and clock makers and managed the 24hr clock at the entrance to the Observatory. Box 79b volume X September 1841 - February 1845 and volume 11 March 1845 - June 1851.
