Description:
  • Pages 1 and 4: Tables of selected UK Stations containing reports for 0100, 0700, 1300 and 1800. Elements reported: pressure, wind, weather, temperature, humidity, visibility, cloud, sea disturbance and state of ground. Also weather for past 24hrs including daily maximum temperature, minimum temperature rainfall and sunshine. Page 2: Table of abridged observations of additional stations in the Aviation Weather Code, forecasts for 24hrs for 20 districts, General Inference, Further Outlook and Synoptic Chart for 0700. Page 3: contains chart of weather in the Northern Hemisphere for the morning (observations not synchronous) Page 4 also includes London observations and a few foreign observations (often blank). 4 page Monthly summary 4 provides general monthly summary and data. Page 4 contains depiction of variation in pressure from Iceland to the Gulf of Lyons. From 1st May 1941 fronts appear for the first time on the UK and NW Coastal Europe Chart but not on the Northern Hemisphere Chart. From 1st January 1942 significant changes to layout (forecasts moved from page 2 to page 1 and chart on page 2 enlarged, Abridged Observations from page 2 moved to page 4 and replace foreign observations section. From 1st February 1942 fronts appear on Northern Hemisphere Chart. From 1st January 1944 page 1 and 4: increased number of stations, District Forecast dropped and general inference and outlook moved to page 3. London Observations move from page 4 to page 2. Abridged Observations no longer included. From 1st August 1944 hours of observations change to 0000 0600 1200 and 1800. By May 1945 German and other European observations reappear on Northern Hemisphere chart. From 1st March 1947 centres of Low and High pressures and fronts were labelled with identifying letters. From 1 January 1949 new codes adopted - key changes = adoption of knots for wind speed instead of Beaufort Scale numbers and of degrees instead of compass points for wind direction, use of eights instead of tenths for cloud amount. From 1 January 1950 pages 1 and 4: smaller observations sections, addition of ship observations on both pages. Page 2: Northern Hemisphere Chart for mid-day 'yesterday' (synchronous observations). Page 3: 3x charts of UK and Surrounding Area - 0000, 0600 'today' and 1800 'yesterday' and general inference and further outlook. London Observations dropped from page 2.
