Description:
- Made by John Newman, an exceptional instrument maker of the 19th century, in London around 1850. This particular barometer, originally made to measure atmospheric pressure in inches of mercury, was later altered by Negretti and Zambra to measure atmospheric pressure in millibars. This type of barometer was used in the UK and sent around the world as a standard barometer for use in meteorological stations. The barometer is of black metal (cast iron?) with the makers name (Newman, 122 Regent Street, London) engraved in a grey metal panel at the top of the instrument. Below this is another grey metal panel, added by Negretti and Zambra. This contains the scale in millibars and the wording: Repaired by Negretti and Zambra. No.34. Standard conditions: 0 deg C, g=980.665cm/s squared.
