Description:
- Made by Negretti and Zambra of London around 1875. This barometer was designed by Admiral FitzRoy to measure atmospheric pressure in inches of mercury and its function was to assist in warning ships at sea of approaching bad weather. Weather sayings were included in the design to enable mariners to produce their own weather forecasts. The case is made of oak, with the thermometer positioned on the trunk of the barometer. The thermometer scale is in black on a white background. At the top of the barometer is the mercury scale, weather sayings, Patent No. 1549 and the makers name: Negretti and Zambra instrument makers to her Majesty.
