The Second part of the register consists of observations made on board HM Scout from Valparaiso to the Hawaiian Islands, under the direction of Captain Tupman, the observers being himself, Messrs Johnson and Nichol. The third part consists of observations made during the stay of the Transit of Venus party in Honolulu at a spot called Apua, near the sea coast, in the town of Honolulu (Latitude 21 degrees 18 minutes north and longitude 10 degrees 31 minutes west) by the three sappers Royal Engineers George Currie, Mark Meins and Edward Myers, attached to the expedition, observations being occasionally made by Captain Tupman and Mr Nichol as a check. Observations give seas surface temperature, directional information, wind direction and force, pressure, temperature, cloud types and amount, weather - beaufort letters , sea state and remarks. Rainfall added once at Apua. Transit took place 9th December 1874 (no note in observations) remarks generally note speed of ship when in transit and notes on instruments once in Honolulu. Covers the period 12 June 1874 - 9 February 1875 when the parties presumably returned home. Accompanying note states that the instruments in use were all loaned by the meteorological Office. The observations have been transcribed out into this volume by G. L. Tupman. And additional set of observations made by Nichol, Tupman and the Royal Engineers Cirrie, Meins and Miers is also present.
