Description:
  • Made in the UK by the company L. Casella, in London. This is the very first thermometer to be supplied to the newly formed Meteorological Board of Trade in 1854. This thermometer is also one of the earliest to have the actual stem of the thermometer engraved. Previously only one or two standard points were marked which were then aligned against the engraved support. This thermometer has a glass tube attached by brackets to a white metal support. The glass tube is engraved and the scale is engraved in black on the white metal support. The white metal support also has L. Casella, London and B.T. No.1 with a crown engraved in black. The glass tube end containing the bulb of mercury extends beyond the metal support.
