Description:
- Professor Dobson invented these instruments and this (NO.2) was his. It was the first one made by Ealing Beck around 1931. It works by monitoring two pairs of wavelengths in the UV part of the spectrum, one which absorbs ozone and one that does not. By utilising two pairs of wavelengths, a well calibrated instrument can determine ozone values to an accuracy of 1% in sunny conditions, when the sun is above a certain angle. These instruments are still used today to measure total column ozone in a global network, its origins were in the UK. Dobson 32 is still used at Lerwick to measure ozone. The instrument is white and has a metal disc midway along the top. A piece of tape with "No. 2" is stuck on the top of the instrument.
