Abstract:
  • The main study objectives are to ascertain the adequacy of quantitative precipitation data derived from the Ingham radar at ranges beyond 70 km; to analyse the reasons for variability, and to propose procedures to improve data so that it reaches defined standards of accuracy. The study involves rainfall data collection from the Lincoln, Leeds and Solihull offices of the NRA and its analysis, in conjunction with radar data, at Met Office, Bracknell. These data are summarised and considered by the Long Range Calibration Study (LORCS) Working Group. Data are analysed with respect to range from the radar, azimuth, rainfall type, anaprop (anomalous propagation of the beam) susceptibility and beam height. Units of analysis are the entire beam area for mapped assessment factors, range data for 7 and 30-day time-sliced analyses, areal rainfall for the 42 LORCS subcatchments and 5km grid squares for anaprop tests. All rainfall data are based on 24 hour totals for the rainfall day starting at 09.00 hrs GMT. Three rainfall gauge networks have been used: Met Office (MO) dense (adopted truth), MO sparse and NRA operational.
